Her parents had given her three gourds that
were left outside all winter. Jan kept looking at the shape of the
gourds and decided to paint something that work with the curves.
The Italian 18th century artist, Amedio
Modigliani is Jan Lawrence's favorite artist and she used his nude
paintings as an inspiration. And so, the three gourds soon became
beautiful nude ladies.
She found that the size and shape of the gourd
gives the art a three dimensional perspective.
As time progressed Jan Lawrence found she was
attracted and inspired by the Japanese culture and art. Soon her hand
painted beautiful nude lady gourds transpired into Geishas.
Turning the hand painted gourds into lamps
resulted in the usual creative process. Making a work of art into a
useable item.
